On Saturday April 6, 2013, Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad proudly placed in service the newest addition to its fleet, replacing an older unit at the Brokenburg station. The new unit is a type 1 ambulance built by Medtech on a 2012 Ford F450 chassis. The new 4 wheel drive ambulance features state of the art technology including an all LED lighting package, and a special low frequency siren designed to make drivers aware of the ambulance's approach. It also features an auxiliary HVAC system that will keep the medication and crew compartment at a constant temperature, even when the unit is not running. Funding for the new ambulance was made possible through the use of combined resources made up of donations from Spotsylvania citizens, and a grant from the Virginia Office of EMS.

The retired ambulance has been donated to the Grace Oughton Cancer Foundation for use as a mobile lab. The lab will provide convenient finger stick lab results to families at off-hour times. The off-hour availability will make it easier for parents of children affected by cancer to plan for work and school absences, as well as care for their other children. The retired unit will also allow the foundation to move toward a mobile platform for bone marrow donor registry.
